The Process at Work

II think the bill will be altered and that the public will come out of this better informed and better connected. That's critical: regardless of what happens in the November elections, Coble will rotate out of his chairmanship next year, and the battle will shift to someone else's district. The biggest story to come out of this won't be the specifics of the legislation, but an important evolutionary step in the interplay of Weblogs, print journalism, and old-fashioned constituent-level politics.

SJ Mercury: We must engage in copyright debate. Dan Gillmor. Average people are not part of the conversation, not in any way that matters. To the cartel and its chattel in the halls of political power, we are nothing but ``consumers'' -- our sole function is to eat what the movie, music and publishing industries put in front of us, and then send money. Home Again

A long travel day, starting in Basalt, CO and ending up back home in Greensboro, via Denver and Charlotte. An amazing week, including several days spent in an unspoiled valley near the headwaters of the Fryingpan river with a group of friends from my Haverford days--30 of us in all, including lots of kids. More on that later.

When I got in I found a message on the machine from Rep. Howard Coble. I think it's right to keep the specifics of his call private, but he said he found my column on the corporate hacking bill to be useful and it is safe to say that we have a dialog going. Then when I logged on (after my longest Webless stretch since the mid-'90s) I found this excellent Davenet on the same subject.

Light Days

I'm following up my most excellent vacation with a quick business trip tomorrow to glamorous Akron, so less than the usual blogflow is likely....

Small world observation number 2: I subscribed to ed's news feed to follow his flyfishing trip. I had no idea that he was linked to the DaveNet aritcle that I started my day with today.

News items can sprout legs and run with a life of their own

DaveNet: North Carolina Matters. [Scripting News]

This network model of locating local politics via the loose connections in web logs could be more formalized and really illustrate the value of the social networks. There is some implied cooperation necessary between local news creators and the web log community. The news aggregator does bring to my attention stories and issues two or three days before they trickle to online sources like news.com and then sometimes another two or three days to hear them more fully articulated on NPR. Off course not all stories make the complete migration but I'm detecting a pattern with the stories that do start as tadpoles in the pond and then sprout legs and run with a life of their own.
