The USGS has a great little survey site where they solicit individual experiences of specific earthquake events. I was a good doobie and filled out the survey.

According to the Anchorage Daily News, the quake was 7.9! How 'bout them apples:

Alaska State Troopers said they had closed one lane of the Parks Highway at the crack, located near Mile 258, about 10 miles north of Healy. Troopers said they were directing traffic around the fissure while awaiting repair crews.

Bruce Turner of the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer said the quake hit at 1:13 p.m Alaska Standard Time.

"It shook for a good 30 seconds," he said. [It shook waaaaaay longer than a mere 30 seconds!]

The epicenter of the quake was 90 miles south of Fairbanks, and 45 miles east-northeast of Cantwell, according the Alaska Earthquake Information Center. It was strongly felt in Anchorage about 270 miles to the south.

There were no immediate reports of injury, but Troopers said there were widespread reports of minor property damage.

KCAM-radio in Glennallen reported that fuel tanks in the Interior village of Slana were tipped over by the quake and that nearby highways suffered damage.

Pretty amazing that there was no major damage. That's probably a combination of two things - the epicenter was in a sparsely populated area. And we have good building codes that are enforced - unlike poor Italy.

We're having an aftershock right now...This is kind of creepy.

My God - the quake had preliminary magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter Scale. That is certainly a Slat Rat record (I missed the '64 quake which was measured at 9.2 on the Richter scale). From the Tsunami Warning Center:

EARTHQUAKE DATA:
PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE: 7.5
LOCATION: 63.5N 147.5W -  45 MILES SE OF DENALI PARK HDQTS., AK.
90 MILES S OF FAIRBANKS, AK.
TIME: 1313 AST 11/03/2002
       1413 PST 11/03/2002
       2213 UTC 11/03/2002

To the uneducated eye, it looks like the epicenter is on the same fault as the earthquake we had ten days ago.

H O L Y  C O W!!!! We just had quite an earthquake. It has to be the longest one I've ever experienced. The Tsunami Warning Center should have a preliminary report shortly.

Sspeaking of weather, I just took a peak at the Alaska Surface Maps. Looks like we have yet another giant low (957 millibars) lurking in the Gulf of Alaska. The Alaska Pennisula and Kodiak are going to get hammered. Which means more wind, rain, and warm temperatures for us.

I just want to have one day where I don't have to wipe Clem's feet when she comes inside. Six straight weeks of muddy dog feet is getting old.

Anchorage Daily News, Sunday November 3, 2002:

It's beginning to feel a lot like...springtime
WARM WEATHER: Anchorage's snow-free October was the warmest on record.

Yup - I have never experienced an October like this one. The grass is still green, people are still running in shorts, the ornamental cabbage is still growing... All in all, pretty darn amazing.
