I'm in three different NCAA pools this year. If I'd been really on top of things, I would have varied my picks among the three pools. But instead, I just stayed the course. Here's my Final Four:
  • Illinois
  • Wake Forest
  • North Carolina
  • Michigan State
My championship game is Illinois vs. Michigan State with Illinois cutting down the nets.

Norwegian Robert Sorlie won the Iditarod - he pulled into Nome at 8:39 AM (just as I was pulling into Kaladi for my morning decaf Americano). This year's race was comparatively slow - warm and punchy conditions for most of the race. All the teams that trained and prepared for 20 to 30 below weather were absolutely crushed by this year's warm weather. Huskies with heavy coats do not like warm weather - it would be equivalent to a person running a marathon in 80 degree weather in a down parka and snow pants. Not at all good.

The other big news is of course, the Senate voted to open up ANWR for drilling. ANWR became such a ridiculously polarizing issue that intelligent debate was completely lost - on both sides. Personally, I would prefer that we NOT open ANWR - but not for the reason one might think. In actuality, I think the oil industry has done a very good job on the North Slope and I think they'll do fine with ANWR. The regulatory structure is such that the companies must walk the straight and narrow.

Nope. My issue with ANWR is that it is yet another delaying tactic. We always manage to squirm out of situations that should force us to take a serious look at our fuel usage patterns. ANWR will bail us out for a little while longer. But the problem is not going to go away.
