I did not forget the Bloomsday thing I wrote about two weeks ago, but I did not bestir myself to find out what was going on in support of it, either. Maybe next year. Definitely 2004, though, it being the centennial. Maybe even in Ireland (Yeah, right.)
So, yesterday? Big to-do on Padre Pio. Msgr. Perini is a particular devotee, having put up a statue of him shortly after beatification. Big Crowd at Vatican as Padre Pio Made Saint. Pope John Paul today made a saint of Padre Pio, a 20th century mystic monk who is said to have borne the bleeding wounds of Christ, as pilgrims flocked to the Vatican. [by way of New York Times: International News] Dr. Chrucy met St. Padre Pio once when he was a medical student in Spain; his friend and he drove through the rain, but would not come forward past the vestibule because of the mud. Padre Pio told them not to worry about it, and, looking down, their boots were clean. Milagroso.
Msgr. Perini spoke on those he knew who were touched by this man. He was to have passed medals that were struck for the saint, but the demand was so great on Saturday that none remained. Next week.
