I was thinking tonight on the way home how change oriented
organizations and individuals, people and groups who talk about being a
learner or a learning company, need to embrace, rather than tolerate
mistakes, because mistakes are the greatest teachers of all. Really big
and sophisticated companies create entire divisions, called Research
and Development, to spend all their time making mistakes, all as part
of a critical inquiry process to determine what works good, what works
better, and what works best. Mediocrity is not brought about through
lack of perfection, but through a misguided commitment to perfection -
perfection as an end, rather than a process.
