It seems really, really sad to me that there are only a couple pages up on the Web that are Googleable on Polynesian Cargo cults, which is just a fascinating phenomenon of primitive meets consumer, taking the idea of consumption and branding to its somewhat logical extreme.

Part of me wonders if we haven't lost our way. Not in some alleghorical way, but that we've really, really lost our way. That somehow, rather than seeing one another as similar strangers in a strange land eons ago, our primitive urges took over, and we fought for resources, rather than developing them cooperatively. That somehow, with nations as large as they are, and the sticks and stones damaging as they are, and people continents and GDP's apart, we are beyond rectifying our contrived cultural differences, celebrating that diversity, while working in concert towards a more glorious evolution, driven by an abundancy model, rather than the scarcity based fear that pervades our lives today, whether we stand as proud American consumers, protected by our nakedness by brand. Or poor Muslim boys, seeking solace in the embrace of extremism. The tragic irony, or genius design, is that if we get too far along in our ability to self destruct, and actually do, that we may get a replay, rebuilding empire from the mud of our ruined cities. Maybe this time, the lesson learned. Maybe this time, though, the earth will burn.
