Defender of evolution
Sad to say, Stephen Jay Gould, paleontologist, writer, and defender of evolutionary theory, died this morning of cancer at 60.

I enjoyed immensely his writings, but appreciated even more his staunch, courageous defense of evolutionary theory, and the teaching thereof, against the assaults of Creationists trying to destroy science in our schools. We've lost a terrific teacher and friend of science.
