Richard Feynman. "There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers." [Quotes of the Day]

PeopleSoft to Buy Rival J.D. Edwards. PeopleSoft said today it would buy J.D. Edwards & Co. for $1.7 billion in stock, creating the second largest business software company. By Reuters. [New York Times: Technology]
PeopleSoft To Acquire J.D. Edwards. As times continue to be tough in the enterprise software market, it's a bit surprising that there haven't been more "big" merger deals. There have been plenty of smaller ones, merging many of the independent players out of business, but major consolidation hasn't taken place. That may be changing, though, as PeopleSoft is buying J.D. Edwards, to create the second largest enterprise software company (after SAP). For now, they plan to operate J.D. Edwards as a subsidiary, and will keep all its product lines, saying that the combined offerings let them cover a much wider market. Over time, though, the product lines are likely to merge. As practiced by the Bush administration:
What a tangled web we weave. . .
I just love what can be done with language, how it can be twisted and tweaked and massaged. What I hate is when it's used to lie, and to cover up lies.
