Buddy Ebsen, R.I.P. Buddy Ebsen, Star of 'The Beverly Hillbillies,' Dies. The lanky actor played Jed Clampett, the canny patriarch of the popular CBS situation comedy about an Ozark farm family transplanted to a California mansion. By The New York Times. [New York Times: NYT HomePage] I was never a big fan of either "The Beverly Hillbillies" or "Barnaby Jones," but I respected Buddy Ebsen because he was a celebrity who not only raced sailboats, he won races. I ran into him (almost literally) at the San Diego Yacht Club after an Ensenada race, and all I remember is thinking, "Hey, he's tall!"
