Don Norman's finally posted his "Design as Communication" piece. It's nicely done, and brings up several thoughts for me. As I've said myself, yes, we're all communicators: everyone involved in user experience is involved in communicating with the user. We can do it with words--instructions, labels, navigation; we can do it with graphics, pictures, diagrams. We can do it with affordances, as Norman describes; we can do it through the story (the narrative) that is the mental model of the system. It's all communication. And if the design fails to communicate, the product fails.
