Don Norman's finally posted his "Design as Communication"
piece. It's nicely done, and brings up several thoughts for me. As
I've said myself, yes, we're all communicators: everyone involved in
user experience is involved in communicating with the user. We can do
it with words--instructions, labels, navigation; we can do it with graphics,
pictures, diagrams. We can do it with affordances, as Norman describes;
we can do it through the story (the narrative) that is the mental model
of the system. It's all communication. And if the design fails to
communicate, the product fails.
