The editor-in-chiefship of ACM magazine is being handed off to the new editorial partnership of Richard Anderson and Jon Kolko, with my hearty approval. Richard recently received SIGCHI's Lifetime Service award for his years of work in support of SIGCHI chapters around the world. Jon teaches design, and recently published Thoughts on Interaction Design, which I'm enjoying reading and learning from.
I will be moving on from writing my current column, "Pushing the Envelope," to a new role as book review editor. But there's more to it than just book reviews: we're positioning this part of the magazine as "(P)reviews," broadening the scope to include reviews and previews of books, of other media such as film, perhaps conferences, perhaps even art shows that include interactive elements. The goal is to support the new editors' stated vision:
. . . increasing the emphasis on "interactions" -- conversations, connections, collaborations, relationships, ... -- as the focal point of the publication, and increasing the relevance of the magazine to all six of its communities of readers (design, usability, research, management, engineering, and education) while remaining focused on practice.
With that in mind, if you have a publication, event, happening[~]be creative[~]that fits the criteria of focusing on interactions, and want to review or preview it, please contact me at fred@fredsampson.com. The first issue is January-February 2008, and planning is underway, so don't hesitate.
As editor, I get to solicit and select contributions, not just write it all myself. I'm looking forward to the new role, but I'll need your help to make it a success.

OK, I surrender: I joined yet another social networking site, on good authority that this one is where the really important people hang out.
Not everyone is aware that many months back
Facebook
expanded its service beyond college students to the public at large. The growing consensus, among many of my colleagues in Silicon Valley, is that Facebook is the one social networking site that really matters, with
LinkedIn
an important site for professional networking. . . JD Lasica [Social Media] But that does not mean that everyone and their dog should ask to be my friend. If I don't already know you, don't ask.
