Anthony contributes his thoughts on O/R Bridges - and he's written his own bridge, so he knows a little about this!
I agree that a paging interface is very necessary, but sometimes (ie the JIRA issue navigator) it's just plain impossible to build. This is a big headache for me at the moment.
This makes me nervous. Changing your data model because your application code changes seems like putting the cart before the horse. Your data model should be well thought out. Any changes to the data model should also be well thought out. This is especially true when multiple applications share access to a database. Changing the data model because of one application's changes is extremely risky.
This used to make me nervous, but not anymore. We just couldn't ship JIRA regularly without changing the datamodel quickly, and being able to evolve it as we add new features. The scariness goes away once you accept that things will change and put in place a strategy to manage that change! For us this is handled by the OFBiz EE auto-model-updating and the JIRA UpgradeManager. BTW does this whole 'accept the data model will change and handle that change' seem like a bastardised XP mantra to anyone else?
PS To me, this whole blogthread is why blogs are fantastic. I've learnt so much about the ins and outs of different frameworks and OR mapping ideas in the last 2 days from about 5 different people.
PPS This is also why blogs are scary - anything I write in this window people read, and sometimes listen / believe. That scares me

You mean if I get some kids - they might play video games with me? Somehow that makes it much more appealing!

Chris is talking about Object/relational fun. All this discussion proves just one thing - different projects need different frameworks!
On that note (and because JoeW is a very smart guy who I trust) I'm going to invest this afternoon (what's left of it) in building a very basic news aggregator using JDO. We'll see how it goes.

Father of Java Has His Eye on 'Jackpot' is an interesting interview with James Gosling on what he is doing now. Is it just me, or does IDEA already do everything that Jackpot does and more? Is this just, not exciting?
