Claribel, Althea, and Mary Ann
This is a picture of Aunt Claribel holding a skull. Claribel Cone was a lot of interesting things, including an art collector, a globe trotter, and one of the first women to graduate from medical school (less interesting to most people, she was my great-grandfather's sister). This picture of her is probably from around 1890. It looks as if she is giving some sort of anatomy lesson, although it is just possible that she is doing a scene from "Hamlet."
The Hamlet reference is timely, as just this morning I heard Dawn Wells, aka Mary Ann from "Gilligan's Island", tell the local Chris and Chris morning show on Rock 92 that she thinks the musical version of Hamlet was one of the finest episodes in the series. I had just been talking about that episode with Lisa, it really is a toe-tapper. I have always been a Mary Ann man in the long-simmering Ginger vs. Mary Ann debate.
Another Hamlet-influenced pop-culture fave of mine is the song Althea by the Grateful Dead, which makes use of specific references (eg 'the clown in the burying ground') to give texture to its themes of indecision and loss.
The Honeymoon Continues
Sydney is staying with my sister in Richmond for a couple of extra days. Elijah is at camp til Saturday. Lisa and I have seen two movies (Minority Report, which I'd give a B+; Bourne Identity, B-), dined out three nights, run in the mornings, and just generally felt free. But. We miss the hell out of our kids and are itching to see them.
