First Round on Me
Thanks to Tarheel Pundit for the permalink. Maybe if Doc comes to North Carolina to visit his mom we can have a regional blogger's dinner. First round on me.
Thinking of local topics reminds me that I'm looking forward to basketball season, because some of the pain the Tar Heels cause me should be mitigated by a writing outlet. One of the scribes at Inside Carolina, Thad Williamson, is a great thinker and writer who applies his talents on occasion to his lifelong love of UNC hoops.
I Deserve a Bonus
Today I spoke French on the phone. It wasn't pretty, but it had to be done. I was trying to get an interview with a guy in Quebec. His secretary spoke no English. I sounded like Tonto I'm sure, but it went OK, even though as I was hanging up she said something that I later realized was "Shall I transfer you?"
Then I left a message in Franglais on his answering machine. Mortifying.
Lisa and I once had a French landlady, a cabaret singer and producer, who spoke impeccable English. One day she mispronounced the word "foreigner" as "for-ane-er." We were crushed because it brought home the fact that even bilingual people mess up, and our French was proficient at best. We sounded like goons. And that was ten years ago.
A Good Sign?
My unofficial count of unsolicited press releases from tech companies is on the rise. Nowhere near the eighty or so emails that would come in on an average day during the bubble, but perhaps a harbinger of better times ahead for the battered tech publishing business. When the unrequested FedExes from companies I've never heard of start piling up on my desk again, I'll know it's time to go long in tech stocks.
