Big Bang
Every once in a while the New York Times demonstrates what a great newspaper it can be. Today's demonstration was the massive article on cosmology in the science section--acres of newsprint given over to a lucidly written summary of current scientific thinking on the origins of the universe.
Meanwhile US News ran a cover story about the practical science that has followed from evolutionary theory. You would think these would be tough times for creation "scientists" seeking to disprove evolution and posit a young universe, but they seem to be keeping busy.
Funeral for a Friend
Herbert Falk died. He was an important part of a multigenerational friendship between his family and mine that goes back to 1930s. The funeral was this morning, a sad one. Overflow crowd at Temple Emanuel downtown. I sat on a step of the balcony staircase with my cousin Benjy. Lots of lawyers turned out for one of their most respected peers. Herbert's son, Robert, spoke for the family, and the Rabbi read a letter from Herbert's wife, Joan. The 23d Psalm in Hebrew and English.
Print Lives
The Times article on cosmology showcased some of the advantages that print continues to hold over an electronic screen. The volume of text was just easier to read on paper, less stressful on the eye than a monitor. There were graphics that would not fit on most screens. And the usual issues of portability, durability, and disposability all were in effect. Print vs. Online is another either-or that really isn't.
Make-up Professionals
If Lisa was here she would have made a cosmetologist joke by now about that cosmology article. But she's in Vermont with the kids, so I'll just do it for her.
