Mr. Sun shines the harsh light of truth on Kindley. I'm with Sol: this isn't about bashing Republicans, it's about trying to raise the level of local politics.

Inside Scoop: "Why has this attracted so much attention? Simple: folks are accusing the local Republican Party Chairman of lying in a pretty public way. That's a problem for someone whose job it is to recruit candidates and help them develop credibility." Well, to be fair, folks are also accusing him of being ignorant about the Constitution and the founding principles of this country.

Should the N&R moderate comments at its letters-to-the-editor page?

Sue and Hardy think so. I'm not so sure. The level of conversation is sometimes perilously dumb, some of the regulars could take a break...but it's an online forum, vox populi, and serious conversations do break out with some frequency.

Another way of addressing the off-topic/juvenile/mean etc. comments is to just ignore them, don't get sucked in -- the jerks end up showing themselves to be jerks, and the conversation continues...

Home after a week at the Jersey Shore. With a biz trip to NY tacked onto the front end, 10 days away. Luna was glad to see me, and I her.

Read: American Pastoral.

Ate: Nana's meatballs.

Drank: Maker's Mark, same as at home, just started earlier in the day.

Blogged: Rental house had wireless.

Lounged, body-surfed, lost at miniature golf to my wife and son, hung out with various nieces, nephews, in-laws, and outlaws.

Fun. I needed that.

JR on the impending launch of the N&R's new site.

Exciting. Promising. And already, I have complaints. It's going to be red. Argh. "Experts" don't always know what they're talking about. You generate heat via content, not retina-burn. And it's going to be "busy." See previous argh.

But I'm ready to be pleased.

I don't think I ever got that raise, by the way...

NYT: "An influential cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church, which has long been regarded as an ally of the theory of evolution, is now suggesting that belief in evolution as accepted by science today may be incompatible with Catholic faith...

"...One of the strongest advocates of teaching alternatives to evolution is the Discovery Institute in Seattle, which promotes the idea, termed intelligent design, that the variety and complexity of life on earth cannot be explained except through the intervention of a designer of some sort.

"Mark Ryland, a vice president of the institute, said in an interview that he had urged the cardinal to write the essay."
