A nice story in today's N&R about Elizabeth Karmel, the Grill Queen, known to her old Greensboro friends simply as "Karmel."

Here's her site.

Our annual pilgrimage to the Jersey Shore is a way of sharing with our kids one of the best parts of Lisa's childhood...but for a guy from North Carolina, I have some history with the shore myself. The Army stationed my father at Fort Monmouth, NJ, and my earliest memory is of him carrying me in the surf at Sandy Hook. One fall day at the Shore, he took this picture of my sister and me...and a large freighter that is preparing to run aground behind us.

Allen Johnson responds to Roch Smith's questions about accuracy in letters, discussion continues in the comments. I believe Allen when he says they're doing about all they can do, given their resources, but I think the opinion pieces could use closer vetting, too -- and sometimes more transparency.

CBS News announces web strategy, including a blog.

NYT: "CBS has decided to treat its online news site much the way other networks treat their cable networks. Its correspondents and producers will create video news reports throughout the day that will be distributed only on the Web site. In addition, Web users will be able to see most of the breaking-news reports used on the network's daily broadcasts, though they will not be able to watch entire programs."

Jarvis: " If they'd had that blog when the Rather scandal developed, we would have had a place to look for and demand their response and they would have had to have responded. Things might have turned out differently..."

N&R reporter Mark Binker on newspaper blogs: "The WSJ article misses that nuance by about 3,000 miles. The piece seems to me to be written from the perspective of an individual (or organization) that still confuses the medium and the message."

Read the whole thing.

Previously, and previouslier.

WSJ.

UPDATE: More from JR. "Blogs are all one thing only in the same way that the News & Record, The Rhino and The New York Times are all one thing. That is, other than being ink on newsprint publications, we have different voices, different reporting philosophies and different points of view. Blogs are no different.

"In our case, the simple answer is that the rules of journalism we follow in the newspaper -- independence, fairness, accuracy, truth-telling -- apply online as well. The message that I give to our staff bloggers is that they must practice journalism and represent the values of the newspaper. We see the blogs as an extension of our journalism, no more, no less."
