We went camping with 3 other families at Wm O'Brien State Park over the weekend. We had one of the primitive group camps and it was a great trip in spite of all the bugs. I got a chance to compare Deep Woods OFF vs. "Marathon" by 3M. Marathon seemed to work a little better, but it was nowhere near the 8 hours it claimed on the package. It turns out that we could have chosen several parks that were much better for bugs including Whitewater State Park that has sandy, well drained soil and Forestville Mystery Cave State Park, which has so many bats that mosquitoes are all eaten up.
We spent the entire day Saturday at Lake Alice, which has a well maintained swimming beach and a huge picnic area. There were some pretty aggressive fish in the swimming area and one attempted to make a meal out of my left nipple. It still hurts. We also rented a canoe and glided over the weed beds of Lake Alice, looking down through the clear water at huge fish sliding by in the shade. The DNR stocks hundreds of crappies and bluegills into Alice as well as northern pike, yellow perch and smallmouth bass. There were plenty of people fishing from shore but nobody with the gumption to get a canoe in that little lake and try the weedy areas. I suspect that would be fun to fish. I will try to get back there and try it out.
Sunday morning, we all lounged by the fire while a pregnant woman with a broken leg served us bacon, eggs and coffee. That was awesome.
