Good article in yesterday's Wall Street Journal about the struggles of a Chinese worker, Wu Lei. He was exposed to N-Hexane at the factory run by the Qianli company where he made calendars for export. The N-Hexane caused nerve poisoning and he found many other workers who had been exposed to the same thing while he was recuperating at the "Hospital for Occupational Disease" When he got out, his employer cut him off and he hit the books and learned Chinese labor law.
China implemented some broad labor laws in the 1990's to help fend off worker unrest. The interpretation and enforcement of these laws is up to individuals with the gumption and finances to force the issue through the courts. In many cases, the workers are winning. Wu Lei has found his calling in helping other workers navigate through the laws.
