I was meditating on a quote by Mark Twain, "Loyalty to the country always, loyalty to the government when it deserves it."

"I'm a voting adult and it's my job to fix it". DIY goddess Ani DiFranco on political responsibility in the Bush era, the "lying, whoring media," life in New Orleans and her bottomless pit of self-loathing. [Salon.com]

He's not "Bush Lite":

-- Here are 2 posts on Congressman Dennis Kucinich from Ohio. He's been against the Iraq war the whole time, which is starting to look very smart. The press doesn't give him much love, and the Democratic Party doesn't either, so I'm giving him some coverage on the Mediaburn Network. --

The Invisible Primary, or why we rely on the major alternative news media.

The Major Alternative News Media

I just finished reading a piece written by Mark Halperin (Oops! Elizabeth Wilner and Marc Ambinder are included in the byline) - so I guess what I've just finished reading is a collaborative piece from The ABC News Political Unit. The piece is published as a web page titled:

"ABC 2004: The Invisible Primary: Which Democrat Will Take on Bush?"

It's a rather tricky little title because the obvious answer is that Dennis Kucinich is already taking on Bush. Therefore, the writers would have been remiss to include Congressman Kucinich among Bush-Lite and Bush-Like Democrats who spellbindly claim they will take on Bush in the future.

I do wonder why Halperin, Wilner, and Ambinder fail to tell you things about Dennis' drive to winning the Democratic nomination - such as the percentage of voters that put him into office the last three elections (since Gephardt is their number two choice, I offer a comparison):

Kucinich Gephardt
1996 = 49.06%

1998 = 66.77%

2000 = 73.989%

1996 = 58.9%

1998 = 55.8%

2000 = 58%

Ok, let's see how these guys match up. Kucinich has 73%, Gephardt has 58%. Gephardt is perceived as able to run against Republicans, Kucinich is not. So, tell me please, how does the ABC News Political Unit measure the perception within the party of a candidate's ability to win the presidency?

Something else troubles me about this piece. Why does the ABC News Political Unit call this series the "Invisible Primary". Is it possible they can't see the candidates? Neither Mark Halperin, nor Elizabeth Wilber, nor Marc Ambinder made mention of Kucinich.  Do they have vision problems, or might there be something else?

=======

Here's a curious piece written only a few weeks before "ABC 2004: The Invisible Primary: Which Democrat Will Take on Bush?" Not sure what it says about Halperin. Maybe you can tell me.

L. Brent Bozell III, President of the Media Research Center, Parents Television Council, and the Conservative Communications Center, begins his  May 6, 2003 Bozell's News Column as follows (emphasis added by me):

George Stephanopoulos and Mark Halperin are soulmates. In 1992, according to Tom Rosenstiel?s inside-ABC book "Strange Bedfellows," it was ABC producer Halperin who helpfully handed Stephanopoulos a copy of Bill Clinton?s old thanks-for-saving-me-from-the-draft letter. ABC then stayed quiet until the Clinton team could prepare a defense against a potentially very damaging story.

Now these two men are major powers in the ABC Political Unit, with Halperin in charge and Stephanopoulos as the top on-air political analyst. When Stephanopoulos appeared on C-SPAN to promote the first televised Democratic debate from South Carolina, he credited Halperin as ABC?s inspiration for sponsoring the event. "We tried to make the best bid we possibly could, because we wanted to get this first debate."
