Army Times Editorial, Complete.

Army Times Editorial, Complete

I've decided to post this Army Times editorial, which I exerpted in this post, in its entirety now that it has been pulled from their site.

Nothing but lip service
Issue Date: June 30, 2003

In recent months, President Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress have missed no opportunity to heap richly deserved praise on the military. But talk is cheap ? and getting cheaper by the day, judging from the nickel-and-dime treatment the troops are getting lately.

Weblog Syndication, Economies of Scale, and Competitive Markets
I've added a link to Jon Udell's "Conversation with Mr. Safe" to the Mediaburn RSS Resources Page.

In my opinion, there's something strange about the proposed "Echo" syndication format. I've written before that if "Echo" is not going to be backward compatible with RSS, and it to my knowledge it will not be so, I have to wonder if it can eventually be used in an anti-competitive way. Will the bloggers be harmed in the long run?

I'm a skeptical business man. We know from history that if a particular technology gains a certain economy of scale, it can marginalize a competitor. In such cases the product's quality, or benefits to the consumer do not make much of a difference. The lower quality product can win if it achieves a certain economy of scale. We know it happend with VHS vs. Betamax, Windows vs. Apple and others.

One thing that we know about Economics for sure is the law of "economy of scale". Once you attain a certain level of resources, life becomes easy. In many cases it's "winner take all."

We do have laws in the U.S. against abuse of this economic principle. They are even enforced from time to time. - Gary Santoro
