EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND - The Royal Scottish Academy presents Helen Frankenthaler - Paintings on Paper (1949 ? 2002), from August 15 to October 26, 2003. This major exhibition, focusing on Helen Frankenthaler's outstanding production of painting on paper throughout her career, features over 40 works. Frankenthaler: Paintings on Paper is organised by the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Florida, and is curated by MOCA Director Bonnie Clearwater. The exhibition was first shown at MOCA during February - June 2003 and travels to the Royal Scottish Academy as the inaugural exhibition in the Academy's new lower galleries.

Painting on paper provides Frankenthaler with an arena for experimentation in gesture and control. Her love of paper started in childhood, and she has retained the creative freedom she experienced working on paper in those early years. Over the past 10 years, she has worked almost exclusively on paper and in a scale that sometimes rivals her large canvases measuring 6 x 7ft.

Intriguingly, Frankenthaler paints her canvases like watercolours and her works on paper like paintings. For her canvasses, she often painted with the stain technique that she innovated during the early 1950's when she began thinning her pigments to the consistency of watercolour and pouring them onto unsized canvas.

In contrast, Frankenthaler's paintings on paper tend to be opaque and layered with oil or acrylic paint and mixed media. Many of the paintings on paper are clearly coaxed into existence. Although they incorporate accidental drips and marks, they appear to have been worked upon with intense labour and considerable calculation.

As Clearwater notes, 'The most successful of Frankenthaler's paintings on paper embody the elements of 'great' works of art or sublime moments in nature. They create an intense emotional experience.'

2004 A Weblog Odyssey: Notes on Senator Tom Daschle's Travel Weblog
A message to the Bush Campaign - weblogs are "it". Let the games begin! The real key, in my opinion are the citizen weblogs. Maybe Userland's Dave Winer will help get that fire burning in New Hampshire? A potential hot bed - feel the burn baby.

Daschle Blog-n-Drive. Tom Daschle is dipping his toe in the blogging waters. Is the party leadership starting to get it, or is this an attempt to co-opt Dean's online thunder? My guess is the latter but I'll give him the benefit of... [Stuff from Wozz 2.0]

New Mexico 491
Highway to hell.
The devil's highway

The road was paved with good intentions (at least, I think it was). There was a stretch of road in New Mexico that had the designated number of "666." It was officially changed to 491

It's Now U.S. 491, Not U.S. 666

By Leslie Linthicum

"The devil's out of here," said Transportation Secretary Rhonda Faught, "and we say goodbye and good riddance."
The Devil's Highway. Satan's Highway. The Highway to Hell.
In a ceremony here Wednesday, the 190-mile highway that stretches into New Mexico, Colorado and Utah was officially renamed U.S. 491 because of decades of complaints that its satanic 666 connotations spooked the people who live along and drive on the highway and repelled tourists who might otherwise take a trip through Navajo country.

Between 1985 and 1992, 22 people were killed while they walked along the 8-mile stretch north of Gallup popular with hitchhikers. The road was named>"Just changing the name isn't going to make it safe,"
Richardson acknowledged Wednesday.

Some people thought that just changing the name would make it safer, but it will not, and has not.

Well, it SOUNDS better at least.
