Toyota Hybrids, Strong!
Toyota to Build Hybrid Vehicles in U.S..
Demand for the Toyota Prius has far exceeded initial expectations, creating a wait of up to six months for the gas-electric car in some areas. Toyota is set to begin selling a hybrid version of the luxury Lexus RX sport utility vehicle in mid-April and a hybrid version of the Toyota Highlander SUV in June.
And, in case you are wondering, I still totally dig my Prius. [Ottmar Liebert]

iPod Shuffle: Apple's Long-Awaited Flash Player.
Steve Jobs announced it today at MacWorld. (Minute-by-minute coverage of Jobs’s keynote is
here at Engadget.) It’s a flash MP3 player, available
immediately (see Apple’s product page) in 512k and 1GB versions. Apple
is clearly taking a new pricing tack with these, hitting price points of $99 and $149—market-leading, aggressively
undercutting prices! I can hardly believe it. Here’s what you get:
- No display. You heard me.
- 12 hours of battery life.
- USB 2.0
- Recharges while connected to the USB port
- Auto-shuffles of playlists with a toggle switch
The unit is fairly small, but Apple is sounding a bit foolish with its emphasis on size (”Do no eat the iPod
Shuffle”), as it is larger than competing devices from iRiver, SanDisk, and various thumb drive units that come with
memory card expansion slots. To me, the iPod Shuffle looks a little on the large and ungainly side, but I haven’t held
one in my hand.
The groundbreaking feaure (non-feature?) here is the lack of display. Apple is taking a philosophical position that
with a flash-based player, navigating a user interface is irrelevant. Load it up with the day’s music and just listen
to it, dammit. It’s a good point, and one I expect to see imitated quickly. However, the Shuffle’s somewhat large size
is all the more perplexing when you remove the need for a screen. What is all that space beneath the control wheel used
for?
Apple is going to make a lot of money today. And my oft-repeated prediction just took another
step toward fruition: a large jukebox and a flash player for everyone. The mini product category (4-6 GB) will get
squeezed.

Production Still: How The Garcia Girls Spent Their SummerAnother Arizona Connection at Sundance '05
Georgina Garcia Riedel was born and raised in Arizona; she is first generation Mexican American. She received her BFA in Media Arts from the University of Arizona where she directed several short films that dealt with issues facing young women. After which, Georgina attended the American Film Institute (AFI) where she received her MFA in directing. HOW THE GARCIA GIRLS SPENT THEIR SUMMER is Georgina's first feature length film.
According to Riedel, "How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer" is a love letter to the town in which my grandmother resides, a small dusty border town called Somerton, Arizona. In the film, Doña Genoveva, the Garcia family matriarch, purchases a car and sets off a chain of events that leads to a sexual revolution within her entire family from her middle-aged daughter to her teenage granddaughter.
Riedel goes on to say, "In the film three generations of women all search for love and sex one long hot summer. There is the teenage daughter who is just discovering what sex is all about and is determined to become a woman, her middle-aged mother who is sexually frustrated and lonely, and the matriarch of the family who, at seventy, has never really experienced true love or sexual fulfillment. What we see is that while these women are divided by generations, they are each experiencing the same emotions and feelings as they discover their sexuality. Which poses the question, 'At what age does a girl stop being a girl and start being a woman?'"
The film was shot in Somerton and Yuma (a dusty border town I somtimes refer to as the armpit of America ... my parents, however, love it!) and screens in the Dramatic Competition. [Cyndi Greening's Radio Blog]
