Rob Galbraith has posted an article entitled "In pro digital photography, megahertz matters" comparing speed of different platforms for his workflow of processing RAW files and making Photoshop adjustments. He concludes that in this benchmark of specialized photoapps + Photoshop, the fastest dual processor Mac (1.25Ghz) is slower than the fastest PC (3 Ghz), except for a few Photoshop operations which use Altivec and/or dual processors.
This elicited much discussion, such as this section on Macintouch. It seems likely that if the authors of the RAW image processing tools could be persuaded to use Altivec, performance would be neck and neck between the two platforms, despite the huge megahertz difference.
