Last night, my wife stopped at a gas station, one of those megastations with dozens of pumps. She said that when she pulled in, she felt uneasy about using an island on either end of the facility, so she picked a less exposed pump toward the middle. As she was pumping, she noticed that everyone else who came in seemed to be avoiding the ends, too, even though they are more accessable and usually busier.
I've heard stories like this from the D.C. area, but this is Florida.
Update: Maybe the phobia isn't all that's spreading.
