District 7 Candidates Speak Out

Mark Binker gave N&R readers a fair and balanced look at the District 7 race in yesterday's edition, but I have not found the on-line version yet.

Its good to get some respect.

I am running to win and I think I have already passed the threshold of being a factor in the race.

WOMAN

The Woman Over-40 Meeting and Networking Candidates forum was held last night at the City Club.  When they say "candidates forum" they mean it.  All candidates on the ballot in Guilford County from Michael Badnarik, George Bush, and John Kerry at the top of the ballot right down to Herb Hendrickson (running unopposed) for Soil and Water were invited to attend or respond.

Invitations to the press were apparently not as forthcoming.  Maintaining a preference for the parking garage around the corner from the Rhino Times I happened to pass by John Hammer and the Muse as they were finishing up a city walk with their dog.  (First time I ever saw that dog moving.)  John was not aware of the forum, but he made a quick adjustment to his schedule and made it over in time.

WOMAN is led by Judith Abraham and Carol Fleming tuthpikr@triad.rr.com.  They have 110 "seasoned career women" in their membership.  Of the candidates who did not attend or respond, GOP members were in the majority so I will say that the perception is that this is a liberal leaning group.  They score big points in my book though because they are one of the few organizations that treat Libertarian candidates on equal par with the other parties.  We all got two minutes.  (Had he shown up, John Kerry might have been given, and needed, an extension I bet.)  For an example of the alternative approach of ignoring the Libertarians, note the last line in the N&R recap of last night's Governor's race debate that was one candidate short of presenting voters with all their options.

In the county commissioner District 7 race me and the Mike's were again cordial to each other.  We should have probably made the case that if raising the bar for etiquette on the board was the objective the best play would be to impeach the entire GC board and replace it with a troika led by us.  Ours was the only 3 candidates per 1 seat race in which all of candidates showed up to speak.

Ostensible Republicans Trudy Wade and Roger Cotten did not show up.  This gives me the chance to mention that whatever you do with your two at-large selections on the ballot, please remember that ABC should stand for Anybody But Cotten.  Go back and read how Mr. Cotten cashed out on his manipulated retirement from the county payroll.  Mr. Cotten is the insider of all insiders in our county government.  The voters of our county should help him honor his previously stated desire to retire from government service.  (Ed. note: At the forum last night Kirk Perkins again showed that he is the best pick to represent the average voter in Guilford County - District 4.)

Quip of the night goes to Amos Quick running for School Board/District 9.  Imagine yourself sitting through almost 90 minutes of talking from dozens of politicians and then the next to last guy on the long ballot gets up before all the tired faces and prefaces his two minute speech with, "I'm just glad I'm not running for soil and water."
