Astronomical Surface Decorations on Ceramics, India part I Not many Indonesian examples that I can find, I think it is time to move on. Next on our list of Astronomical Civilizations is India. In India the first references to astronomy are to be found in the Rig Veda which is dated around 2000 B.C. Vedic -Sudheer The Jantar Mantar (Sanskrit for "Magical Device") in Jaipur includes some very large astronomical instruments. Of the many pieces there, the hemispheres of Jai Praksh Yantra stand out. (2, 3 ) Simplistically, the hemispheres of Jai Parakash Yantra are large bowls in the ground. They have coordinates and stars marked on their interior. Suspended over each bowl is a disk on a wire whose shadow marks the location of the sun in relation to the stars. (I was lucky enough to visit this site.) Hmmm...a bowl.... 2:25:39 PM |
