Astronomical Decoration on Ceramics, Greek part IV Raimondo Ferrario's presentation; Greek Constellations in Thales Times - Suggesting an astronomical reading of animal friezes on archaic Greek vase painting. Given at the Fourth Conference on the Inspiration of Astronomical Phenomena, Magdalena College, Oxford, England August 2003 (page 90.) Ferrario notes that many of the figures are similar to constellations of the same name. He asserts that one should read the friezes during the Orientalizing Period as representing constellations. Common representations are around summer solstise, marking the Greek new year, and winter solstice. I am not able to find out more on Raimondo Ferrario's work at this point..... 10:34:14 PM |
