Killed in the Line of Duty
Today I came face-to-face with the fact that I've been relying way too much on RSS feeds rather than local sources for news.
This afternoon, while out running errands, I approached an intersection where I spend a lot of money—Safeway for groceries, Papa Murphy's or Jack in the Box when I don't want to cook, Firestone when my car needs work, etc. Often I just pass through on the way somewhere else.
Today, traffic on 272nd was backed up behind police cars from Tukwila and the Port of Seattle parked in the lane—there's no shoulder there—with their strobes flashing. I looked to see what was going on and saw the memorial set up where Federal Way Police Officer Pat Maher had been shot while on duty on Saturday.
I'm appalled that I had not heard of this earlier, but it was my own fault. I don't watch tv news very often and since the local papers don't have RSS feeds, I've tended to neglect them recently. I have got to get back in the habit of reading the local news first! At least I found out before the memorial procession, which will be passing just a few blocks from here on Thursday. I'll be there.

The intersection where this shooting happened is rather remarkable because each corner is in a different city! In the top right corner of this map, you can see where the cities of Des Moines, Kent, and Federal Way all meet. (The fourth corner of the intersection, shown in white on the map, is an unincorporated bit of King County.) The altercation started at the Arco AM PM Minimart on the Federal Way corner and the shooting happened across 272nd on the Kent corner. |
