Miscellany
When you are standing there, looking down into a pit that used to be the foundation for two enormous buildings, and the last time you stood in that spot those buildings were still there, still alive with people, it's just hard to comprehend. All you see is a hole and dirt and the the facade where the subway used to be. And you see workers moving around and Caterpillar trucks driven by burly men smoking cigarettes and wearing hardhats and you think, ok, this isn't so bad, they've rebuilt so much already and maybe, just sitting here watching these men work, I can feel hopeful about what will rise here.
Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness |
§ - Nine-Year-Old Foils $164,000 Robbery - What I want to know is, were/are they just planning to pack the cash into a box and ship it to Bangladesh?! Why wouldn't they just do an electronic transfer to an account there? And they couldn't have been keeping it much of a secret since it doesn't sound like the robbers would have had any other motivation to be there except to go after the cash. Of course the reporter focuses on the boy-uses-cellphone point, which is not a big deal, really, while ignoring the truly interesting points of this story.
§ - Darn Those Pop-Up Ads! They're Maddening, But Do They Work? - "If you're running a website, you have to be careful as to how much you abuse your customers."
§ - A Predator Pays for His Crimes - "With a string of arrests for drug dealing (including several where he was caught with bags of heroin or vials of crack cocaine) and armed robbery, Brooks almost certainly should have been behind bars on the day that he murdered the seven members of the Dawson family."
§ - Class Slobbery - "I must admit that it wasn't a complete surprise to see how utterly and conveniently useless the average British male under 25 is. The posh and privately educated ones are just exaggerated, more offensive versions of their lower-class counterparts."
§ - Through the Cracks - "Our lives as a series of frustrating encounters, connected by a fabric of retardation."
§ - True—but it sounds like really, really bad tv - Officials Probe Bizarre Pa. Bank Robbery
§ - And what about the rights of the chickens?! - Scores of Freed Mink Feed on Farm Animals - "I'm not into anyone running around with fur coats on, but you cannot let 10,000 semicarnivorous animals out without having serious consequences."
§ - Shades of that Geico ad! - Deer Blindsides Jogger in Wisconsin
§ - Amen! - More Noise
