Miscellany
§ - GWTW Is Still #1 - Thanks, Bill
§ - This is why pilots use checklists! - Wires Cut on In-Bound Plane
§ - Poor babies! - Pay Before Filling Plan for Fuel - I think Australia will survive! We've been doing prepaid here for so long now that I'd almost forgotten that it hasn't always been that way.
§ - Beer Saves Man's Life - I don't drink alcohol and can't even stand the smell of beer, but here I am posting this link anyway!!
§ - Girl Makes Bong for 'Show-and-Tell' - Unfortunately, I don't think that this is really all that uncommon anywhere anymore. My friend's granddaughter at age 9 came home from her weekends with her dad discussing details of drug use that she certainly shouldn't have known. Fortunately, she hadn't used any drugs herself and this situation resulted in a court order restricting her dad to supervised visitation only—not that he was ever willing to pay the court-appointed observer—but it's scary that the child could end up in that situation in the first place. And that was in Utah, not the slums in L.A. or NYC. It's everywhere...
§ - New UFJ Bank Dress Rules Buck Casual Trends - "Hair color, according to the new regulations, must be no lighter than a 7 on the 20-scale color chart issued by the Japan Hair Color Association. A seven can barely, but only just barely, depending on the lighting, be distinguished from your everyday basic black." - I gather they don't hire blond foreigners! I was interested in getting a look at their color chart but it doesn't seem to be online (at least not so it's findable searching in English) but I did come across a related article.
§ - Just saw a tv ad for a toy, Dusty the Talking Vacuum Cleaner. Very clear disclaimer across the bottom of the screen: "Not a real vacuum cleaner." Well, no, I wouldn't think so. But they really missed a great marketing opportunity by not making it a real carpet sweeper! I'd never waste the money buying the thing as-is, but I'm a great believer in carpet sweepers—even 2-year-olds can clean up their own crumbs using one!—and wouldn't mind a cute, fun one for the (future) grandchildren.
§ - Asthmatic Man Says Playing Oboe Has Been Instrumental in Recovery - Hmmm... Wonder if it would help sinuses too? Probably not as much but I used to play the oboe and have been thinking of taking it up again so this is another check mark in the "do it" column.
