Wicked

I haven't posted anything since Tuesday for a couple of reasons. First, I've just been so busy at work that I feel like I'm up to my ass in aligators. Second, I really haven't had that much to say. I guess I relied too much on my "friend" Johnson for material.

Anyway, I was in Barnes & Noble the other day just browsing when I came across an unlikely buy for me. I'm not much into books based on fantasy. I love science fiction (good science fiction I mean, not the Star Wars variety). I picked up a book that I just couldn't put down, so I bought it. It's Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The current Broadway musical Wicked is based on it. It's pretty addictive and I'm only about a quarter of the way through it. I'll probably finish it before the day is over. The book tells the story of  Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who really wasn't so wicked after all.

Also, on Friday I was listening to Imus in the Morning when the I-Man has Tony Hendra on as his guest. Hendra reminded me of one of the great parodies foisted on New Yorkers during the newspaper strike in the fall of 1978. I was living in the city at that time and we had to rely on Rev. Moon's World News because the New York Times, New York Post and The Daily News weren't around. He, the late George Plimpton, and others put out the first and only edition of Not The New York Times.

Headlines from October 16, 1978 in "All the News Not Fit to Print." included: "Marathon Runners Blamed By City For Bridge Destruction", "Pope Dies Yet Again; Reign Is Briefest Ever", "Fall Season Thrown Into Confusion By Studio 54 Blaze" (apparently they wouldn't let the firefighters in because they weren't dressed appropriately - you had to live in New York in the '70's to understand the humor in this one). Yet another reason to miss George.

I was also rather surprised with the results when I took my Nerd Purity Test:

You answered "yes" to 22 of 100 questions, making you 78.0% nerd pure (22.0% nerd corrupt); that is, you are 78.0% pure in the nerd domain (you have 22.0% nerd in you). Your Weirdness Factor (AKA Uniqueness Factor) is 26%, based on a comparison of your test results with 378675 other submissions for this test. The average purity for this test is 73.7%. The first submission for this test was received June 17, 1994.

The Eagles are beating the Giants like a red-headed stepchild and Rutgers lost a hell of a game to the traitors of Boston College that my son and I witnessed from Row 1 on the 15 yard line. I hope B.C. vanishes into the bottom of the A.C.C. Since Notre Dame walloped Brigham Young, I guess God is a Catholic. Better get rid of my Bible and buy a copy of The Code of Canon Law. Damn.
