Apple releases a security update [MacRumors]

Had lunch with a friend who works at ISS today, and he mentioned that they were announcing a major sendmail vulnerability today. Then I get home and find that Apple already has a patch in Software Update.

Cool.

slimp3.jpgNew ways to stream MP3s from a computer to a stereo just keep popping up. The latest to surface is the SLIMP3, which streams music files over Ethernet, and works with Mac, PC, and Linux. Since it uses Ethernet rather than 802.11b, it's unclear how this improves on something like the HomePod, which uses 802.11b to wirelessly stream MP3s to a stereo.

[Gizmodo]

Well, Gizmodo is certainly behind the times with this one. The SLIMP3 (née SliMP3) has been around for some time. Here is their homepage from August 2001.

Of course, who am I to criticize. I have lusted for one of these since Jeff first pointed it out to me probably more than a year ago, and I still haven't ordered (and I am usually quite the impulse buyer when it comes to gadgets.)

Oh, but if Gizmodo wants to know how this improves on the HomePod, then they just don't get it. Look at the two. Look at the display on the SLIMP3. That is a 40x2 vacuum fluorescent display. You can't even see the display in pictures of the HomePod, but it is LCD, and I guarantee it isn't as beautiful or useful as the SLIMP3 display.

What I've always found most compelling, though, is the passion that the guys behind the SLIMP3 have for their product. You can still catch at hint of that in the current FAQ (e.g., use of more expensive display technology) or this leftover page where you used to be able to see them working on hand-made prototypes. I regret to report that the new web site is a bit more corporate and fails to convey some of that original excitement, but that happens sometimes.

I do have to thank Gizmodo for prompting me to check out the site where I found that they are now SLIMP3 rather than SliMP3, they have a new remote control, and they have lowered the price (to $229.)

While reading a MacCentral article about Apple's recent posting of scripts for Sony Ericcson Clicker (SEC), I ran across a comment that led me to check out another Bluetooth remote application: Romeo.

It looks as if Romeo started out a little more "hard-coded" than SEC, but its author says he will be adding scriptability. I think its mouse emulation sets it apart from SEC, though. How cool is it that Mac users have two of these apps. from which to choose, and I still haven't heard of anything similar for Windows?
