Another entry into the field of personal video recorders, this one from TerraTec. This one differs a bit from TiVo and ReplayTV, though, in that instead of being just one box, it's actually modular. The LANcaster has three separate parts - a TV tuner, a storage module, and an interface module - which can be joined together over Ethernet connections. The advantage here is that you can easily add extra storage space, something that's a pain to do (and warranty-voiding) with a TiVo or a ReplayTV, and put interface modules in different parts of the house to be used with other televisions. This is exactly how I think PVR should be done, and it would help fix my Alias/Children of Dune quandary. In fact, I think this is how digital home entertainment should be done, in general. I should be able to add storage, receivers, and playback units independently, and they should work together to form a distributed media system. LANcaster is somewhat reminiscent of the Moxi system, but even more distributed.
Looking at the TerraTec site, however, I'm somewhat doubtful that this product will really make much impact. Reviewing the current product line, TerraTec doesn't seem to have much experience with consumer electronics, and that is a big barrier. Ask ZapMedia. |
