New TVs ROCK

Having a new TV is wonderful thing. After work, I wandered over to BestBuy to look at TVs. I knew I wanted HD, I thought I wanted widescreen.

I was right.

I am now the proud owner of a Samsung 30" 16:9 HDTV Monitor. I've gotten it hooked up to my X-Box and into the Satellite System. The DVD player comes later. Still figuring out just how to handle that. The back has two component inputs and two composite inputs, and the side has an S-Video. Currently, Component one is my X-Box with the sound plugged into the TV. The S-Video jack on the side is served by my tuner. Going to have to play with the whole issue of plugs and such.

But damn is that a pretty image!

Four Day Educational Week

Educational Diversity is something that, as a society, we have to think about. With our test scores falling, in most places, our budgets for education are being chipped away by shortfall and economic decline, we have to be resourceful when it comes to the education of the next generation of Americans. Some schools have even gone to the four day school week.

My first thought was: "Oh crap, this is ridiculous" but the more I think of it, the better of an idea it was. So long as you can maintain the instructional hours, why not free up that fifth day for in-the-field research and experiential learning? We could craft programs that would take these teachers on their off days and do Interesting things with them. Taking biology? Field trip to the local [insert local ecological phenomena here]. Taking physics? Day research at local university's physics lab (in Davis, this was a really kickass Particle Accelerator). English class? Book circle discussing [insert pop novel here]. Economics? Spend a day at work with your parents understanding what it is they do a little better.

Granted this type of program works better in smaller towns, as communities would wrap themselves around a program like this a lot easier than a metropolitan area could.

The more I think of this, the more reminded of KSR's Pacific Edge than anything else...
