"Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is 'Not One Damn Dime Day' in America.
On 'Not One Damn Dime Day' those who oppose what is happening in our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending. During 'Not One Damn Dime Day' please don't spend money. Not one damn dime for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse purchases. Not one damn dime for anything for 24 hours.
On 'Not One Damn Dime Day', please boycott Walmart, KMart and Target. Please don't go to the mall or the local convenience store. Please don't buy any fast food (or any groceries at all for that matter). For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy down. The object is simple. Remind the people in power that the war in Iraq is immoral and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and that it is their responsibility to stop it."
Carrboro: "A candlelight peace vigil to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 20, at the Carrboro Farmer's Market. This peace vigil, along with others in North Carolina, is sponsored by the North Carolina Council of Churches, with local peace supporters co-sponsoring the events."
This is the America I love, an America in the true spirit of liberty and freedom. Those Americans deserve all the support they can get. They know what is happening.
New Yorker: "The President and his national-security advisers have consolidated control over the military and intelligence communities' strategic analyses and covert operations to a degree unmatched since the rise of the post-Second World War national-security state. Bush has an aggressive and ambitious agenda for using that control - against the mullahs in Iran and against targets in the ongoing war on terrorism - during his second term. The C.I.A. will continue to be downgraded, and the agency will increasingly serve, as one government consultant with close ties to the Pentagon put it, as 'facilitators' of policy emanating from President Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney. This process is well under way."

Jeanette Winterson: "We cannot afford war; we need our resources to help the world's real victims - victims of poverty and calamity. The needless war in Iraq has devastated a nation and used billions of dollars that could have been spent on aid, education, health, culture - and indeed on the peoples of the Indian Ocean who have lost everything."
