Yahoo: "Even with a robust economy that was adding jobs last year [sic], the number of Americans who fell into poverty rose to 37 million - up 1.1 million from 2003 - according to Census Bureau figures released Tuesday.
It marks the fourth straight increase in the government's annual poverty measure.
The Census Bureau also said household income remained flat, and that the number of people without health insurance edged up by about 800,000 to 45.8 million people."

Hurricane Katrina will make the situation for many people even worse. While the media are moaning about the costs for insurance companies, the real cost is to lives and the damage to homes and properties.
WSWS: "Though the federal government provides insurance for flood losses, many, and in particular the poorer residents, do not have this coverage. Particularly in Alabama and Mississippi, relatively few people have insurance to cover flood damage.
Estimates on insured losses as a result of Hurricane Katrina range from $9 billion to $25 billion, while total losses - insured and uninsured - are likely to be twice that level."

"US Ambassador to the UN, John Bolton has gutted the draft outcome statement for the upcoming UN Millennium Plus Five summit, removing from it all references to nuclear disarmament, all references to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), introduced to the UN in 1996 by Australia, all references to a Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty and all references to nuclear-free zones.
Bolton's deletions total about 750, and cover not only nuclear disarmament but wide areas of arms control, human rights, environmental protection, trade, climate change, UN reform, and other  topics that will be discussed at the september 14-16 UN Millennium  Summit.
He has in many ways trashed not only the nuclear disarmament sections  of the UN summit, but the entire summit."
