The Iraq debacle on Simpsons.

Guardian: "The verdict on Saddam is just. Yet everything stinks about the process by which it has been reached. Sentence on the condemned tyrant will probably be carried out before the trial of his cousin Ali Hassan al-Majeed, known as Chemical Ali. It is widely expected that the execution will be rushed so that Saddam cannot give evidence at Majeed's trial about collusion between Washington and the former tyranny, which could grievously embarrass the US."

LewRockwell: "Now that the Bush administration has adopted the torture and detention practices of Saddam's regime, one wonders what would be the fate of Americans accused of an assassination plot against a US president?
But, to get to the main point, let us assume that Saddam is guilty as charged and that his death so serves the cause of justice that it is worth heightened sectarian conflict and even full-fledged civil war. What did Saddam do that Bush, and Cheney, and Rumsfeld, and Blair have not done?

If Saddam can be sentenced to death for his responsibility in the killing of 148 Shiites, what about Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Blair's responsibility for the tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians slaughtered by Bush's invasion of Iraq? This massive carnage is the direct consequence of an illegal invasion - a war crime in itself for which Nazi leaders were sentenced to death - that was based on lies and deception.
Will the neoconservatives escape responsibility for launching the wars that have turned the United States into a war criminal abroad and a police state at home?"

Independent: "One of the worst and most dramatic power failures in three decades plunged millions of Europeans into darkness over the weekend, halting trains, trapping dozens in lifts and prompting calls for a central European power authority.
The blackout, which originated in north-western Germany, also struck Paris and 15 French regions, and its effects were felt in Austria, Belgium, Italy and Spain."
Ah, those are the blessings of the privatisation and deregulation. It isn't the first time this happens. In the meantime Europe is lambasting Russia about the insecurities in energy supplies.

Workbench: "Liberal bloggers are trying desperately this evening to get the mainstream media to cover a dirty trick of monumental proportions being waged by the Republican National Committee: Millions of obnoxious automated calls are being made that sound like they're coming from Democratic candidates."

NancyForCongress: "Someone is flooding homes with harassing robo calls. They are making it sound like many are coming from the Boyda campaign. These calls are part of the dirty tricks funded by billion dollar lobbyists from back East."

A cease and desist letter was sent to the NRCC.

More about this on AlterNet.

More tricks: "The American Civil Liberties Union failed to persuade a Circuit Court judge Monday to extend by 24 hours the deadline for voters to mail their absentee ballots to local election boards.
The suit filed by the ACLU and other parties alleged that some voters would be disenfranchised because their requests for absentee ballots were not processed by local boards in time for voters to receive them and then have them postmarked by the Monday deadline."

AlterNet: "The announcement of Saddam Hussein's death sentence two days before our midterm elections brings to mind the opening scene of Woody Allen's film Bananas. Howard Cosell is covering the impending assassination of a dictator in an unnamed Banana Republic. On one side of the street, Cosell thrusts a microphone under the dictator's nose and asks how it feels when one is about to be assassinated."

And there's a lot at stake today:
CommonDreams: "US Vice President Dick Cheney said he would likely refuse to testify before Congress if he is faced with a subpoena from the opposition Democratic party.
The Democrats say if they prevail in Tuesday's legislative elections they may launch investigations into past actions taken by President George W. Bush's administration, possibly even issuing subpoenas to compel prominent officials to testify."
