Americans don't seem to get it. One moment they appear to be all tolerant of the whole world, the next they're back in their Homeland Ueber Alles crap. And the Cold War indoctrination is back in business. You can do it while tending your orchids.
Take AmericaBlog about the former Russian spy, Litvinenko. Now AmericaBlog is demanding from Bush to take action. First, that is like asking Hitler to help the Jewish people. Second, Bush may bloody well have done something already.

You always have to look at the reason for a murder. When a spy dies it's just a comma; these people are specialised in taking out other people.
But what is the effect of this murder on a wider scale? Russia is right now involved in talks about European-Russian co-operation. This murder effectively creates an atmosphere that destroys the basis for the talks. Who profits from this? Not Putin, but good old bloody America (they even shoot presidents there, remember).
If a secret service would kill they would do it as quietly as possible. This murder was elaborated to create the maximum media effect.
And is it probable that in a situation in which there is overall surveillance the transport of radioactive substances over borders and in a city by foreign spies would remain unnoticed by the powers that be? No way!

BlairWatch: "Given the latest suspect substance (Po-210) and the likely consequences of ingestion, the attacker must have known that they were killing a particular peson and killing them slowly enough to get headlines, using a method that would guarantee maximum exposure. In other words, Mr. Litvinenko was murdered at people..."
But Putin would not be that stupid, he would not risk endangering the Euro-Russian talks. Look at the result now. He is highly embarrassed by it all. Who profits most from it? The Bush administration, who is very much against any European co-operation with Russia. And at the same time it is a very useful terrorist scare that suits the 'warriors against terror' very well.

We see the same situation in Lebanon, where another murder has been committed. Again the Syrians are accused. Who profits from this? Some time ago Libya was accused of the Lockerbie bombing. Later it turns out we have all been fooled. But for now the media circus is working overtime.
We live in a cynical world, and in politics killing people who are publicly considered to be our own, is done on a regular basis, indeed, it is one of the most sure methods to incite revolt or torpedo relationships. It's as simple as that. Get real.
