UN: "A day after the Iraqi High Tribunal ended its first trial of Saddam Hussein and sentenced him to death by hanging, the Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Leandro Despouy, reiterates his strong objections regarding the conduct of the trial and expresses his concern about the consequences this judgment may have over the situation in Iraq and in the region."

The hypocrisy of the powers that be, the US and the UK, has become overly blatant:
Guardian: "In Geneva today, at the new review of the conventional weapons treaty, the British government will be using the full force of its diplomacy to ensure that civilians continue to be killed, by blocking a ban on the use of cluster bombs. Sweden, supported by Austria, Mexico and New Zealand, has proposed a convention making their deployment illegal, like the Ottawa treaty banning anti-personnel landmines. But the UK, working with the US, China and Russia, has spent the past week trying to prevent negotiations from being opened."

Independent: "Democrats have won control of the House of Representatives and are challenging the Republican majority in the Senate in a mid-term election blow to President George Bush."

Whatever the outcome for the Senate, taking into account the cheating by the Republicans, the Democrats have won a major landslide victory in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
About 24.3 million Americans attempt to register or re-register each year. 1.9 million would-be voters still found themselves barred from the ballot today.
Republicans with Blackberries loaded with lists of new voters were assigned to challenge citizens in heavily Black and Hispanic (i.e. Democratic) precincts to demand photo ID that perfectly matches registration data.
Millions of votes will not be counted. The chance your vote will 'spoil' is 900% higher for Black folk and 500% higher for Hispanics than for white voters.

nbc4i: "Sixteen polling locations where earlier voting machine problems caused delays and where waits were an hour or more must stay open an extra 90 minutes, a federal judge ruled late Tuesday.
U.S. District Court Judge Dan A. Polster made the ruling after the Ohio Democratic Party sued Cuyahoga County in an attempt to get the hours extended beyond the scheduled 7:30 p.m. closing time.
Despite an emergency appeal by the office of Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the decision but also ordered all votes cast after 7:30 p.m. to be provisional ballots."

NewsFromUnderground: "Over the past several days, voters throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia have filed complaints of incidents aimed at suppressing voter turn out in heavily Democratic and African American neighborhoods."
