Reuters: "The United States, which has the most prisoners of any country in the world, last year recorded the largest increase in the number of people in prisons and jails since 2000, the Justice Department reported on Wednesday."

What's happening? Are Americans more criminal than other nations? Of course not. I suppose the prison industry is getting out of hand. While the mass murderers in government are still on the loose.

Independent: "I suppose that astonishment is not the word for it. Stupefaction comes to mind. I simply could not believe my ears in Beirut when a phone call told me that Lord Blair of Kut al-Amara was going to create 'Palestine'. I checked the date - no, it was not 1 April - but I remain overwhelmed that this vain, deceitful man, this proven liar, a trumped-up lawyer who has the blood of thousands of Arab men, women and children on his hands is really contemplating being 'our' Middle East envoy."

It's true Blair had his success with Northern Ireland. But I doubt whether he would be able to pull this one. He has delusions of grandeur. After his abdication yesterday he needed something tangible to keep himself in the picture (and be able to pay his mortgages).
His stepping down as pm and resigning as member of Parliament yesterday went without any harsh words from the opposition. It seemed like Blair had more opposition from his own party. That shows how right-wing Blair was.
Gordon, it's up to you to do much better.

Reuters: "A Senate chairman heading an investigation into the Bush administration's warrantless domestic spying program subpoenaed documents on Wednesday from the White House, Vice President Dick Cheney's office, the National Security Council and Justice Department.
Setting up a possible courtroom showdown, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy gave the administration until July 18 to turn over specified materials that the White House last week declared off limits and highly classified."

Here is Fiore on this theme.
