Phi Beta Homeless
Incredible story online today about a student at New York University who couldn't afford housing, so he lived in a library basement for the past eight months. He slept on chairs for eight freakin' months rather than just give up on NYU and attend someplace else.
Apparently while he could come up with the money for his education ($31,000/year), there was not enough left for a place to call home. Talk about having your priorities in order. I wish I had students who were 1% this dedicated to their studies. Hell, I wish I were that dedicated. There's no way I'd teach and live in the school's basement. I've been down there. Horror movies could be filmed down there, no problem.
As it is, this guy now has a story to remember for the rest of his life and the ultimate guilt trip to hang on his kids one day. Forget the "I had to walk to school through ten feet of snow every day" speech. They'll get the "I lived in a goddamn library basement for eight months so that I could spend $31,000 on learning something so that one day I could have a job that would pay for your X-box, DSL, and Air Force Ones. Now get your lazy butt out of that way-more-comfortable-than-three-chairs-stuck-together bed and hop in the Mini-van so I can drive your dumb ass to school" speech.
