Hiking Around Heidelberg
Yesterday we made the one hour drive to Heidelberg. Of course we picked one of the hottest days so far this summer (92 or so), which had an adverse effect on our energy levels. That and the 300-step climb up to the castle that looms over Heidelberg combined to kick our asses. Did manage to score a couple of ice creams once we reached the top, but still, it was more of an ordeal than we'd envisioned when we set off from Miesau.
The oddest part of the trip was running into the "World Champion Red Star Twirlers" from East Derry, New Hampshire in the market square. The part of their performance that we witnessed was a Christmas medley, complete with X-mas costumes. Again, it was freakin' hot out there, yet they were twirling away to "Winter Wonderland." The Germans watching seemed just as perplexed as we were. But hey, you don't go questioning the world champs' choice of music. They know more than you do.
Twirlers aside, Heidelberg is a beautiful place and well worth the visit. Just need to pick a cooler day, especially if you plan on taking the hike up to the castle.
Here's some pretty pictures of Heidelberg. Click at your leisure.
