Another Goodbye
The toughest thing about living in Germany is that you don't get to see the people you care about very often. That's why I so eagerly anticipated this summer because I knew I'd get to spend quite a bit of time with both my mom and Marcela. Sure we'd also get to go to places like Paris and London, too, but what I really wanted was someone here to make my home feel like more of a home.
So my mom came at the very beginning of July and stayed for a week and a half. We had a great time, but then I had to say goodbye to her in Heathrow. That was pretty tough. Seemed like she had just gotten here and then it was time for her to go.
Then Marcela arrived a few days later. She was going to stay for almost five weeks. Plenty of time to do all the things we'd planned for months, right? Well, not exactly. You'd be surprised at how quickly five weeks can pass.
Well, the time to say goodbye to Marcela came this afternoon. I saw her up to the security checkpoint at Frankfurt and watched her get screened and passport checked. Then she turned a corner and was gone.
Five weeks wasn't enough time to do all the stuff we wanted, but it was plenty of time to get used to someone else being here.
So now the summer I'd looked forward to since the day I arrived is over. The day I dreaded coming since the day summer began still has a few more hours to go.
