The official NASA line since the loss of Columbia and all on board her, was that even if they had known about the damage to the heat shield, there was nothing that could have been done to save the crew. Now it appears that an internal NASA studies contradicts that standpoint.
The Columbia Accident Investigation Board asked the space agency to conduct a study to see if a resuce could have been mounted. According to the study, the existence of which was confirmed on Friday by Harold Gehman, Chairman of the Investigation Board, Atlantis could have been launched by February 9 or 10 as it was already being prepared for a March 1 launch.
