The official NASA line since the loss of Columbia and all on board her, was that even if they had known about the damage to the heat shield, there was nothing that could have been done to save the crew. Now it appears that an internal NASA studies contradicts that standpoint.

The Columbia Accident Investigation Board asked the space agency to conduct a study to see if a resuce could have been mounted. According to the study, the existence of which was confirmed on Friday by Harold Gehman, Chairman of the Investigation Board, Atlantis could have been launched by February 9 or 10 as it was already being prepared for a March 1 launch. The mission, which would have involved multiple spacewalks would have been hazardous but could have worked. [spacetoday.net]

I've been a big fan of Myst since it first appeared. I was slightly disappointed with Riven but I felt Exile was superb. The good news is that the Miller brothers are at it again with Uru: Ages Beyond Myst. The big difference? Uru will be a multiplayer game played over the Internet. [Wired News]

I just checked my e-mail after a gap of 24 hours. Addmittedly it was a Saturday, but I received a total of 92 messages. All but six of them were spam. Fortunately, the OS X Mail client filtered most of those and I only had to manually delete four. But I calculate and 93 percent of my e-mail was unsolicited. That gives you an idea of the problem we all face.
