On authentication
Something that seems to be bobbling around at the moment is the idea of 'ownership' of content created in an LMS and also, more importantly 'access'.
Typical picture:
- I create my content in Blackboard (for example) or, alternatively, I cerate content and upload it to BB, or, content is collaboratively created on a discussion board.
- Content is now 'stuck' within BB... unless you have authentication to get in, want to reload it somewhere else or copy & paste stuff out... ouch!
Well, it's not that bad as all that as usually, I guess instructors just want that material to be available to paid up students... but when it comes to motivation, utilizing these sources, exemplars, knowledge communities and the joy of sharing & openness then it doesn't offer much.
So, if a weblog was used instead of an LMS... Hey, why not? Radio's got discussion facilities, content storage, you can pop in chat facilities etc... then, you've got all your content, discussion etc. 'out there' and how much of a bad thing can that be? A real 'open' university?
(I understand economical imperatives, privacy and legal issues that Pam writes about today - but looking at projects such as schoolblogs I fancy just going off on a non-balanced one about this)
Hmmmmm, more to come...
