- This experiment is designed to test whether you can spot the difference between a fake smile and a real one. - It has 20 questions and should take you 10 minutes. - It is based on research by Professor Paul Ekman, a psychologist at the University of California via [Gawker]

La Semana Music: La Semana work mixes Mood: excited Man, I am liking this. Can't wait to record the bass next week! Jon reports that he can barely put his new Lakland down - loves it!! This is some good stuff. Well, if we had a subscription service set up, I would share some of this...Undoubtedly my finest playing ever - nice to see the progress...but why does it have to be so hard to define the sound of a new album? It is always a fight and every time, starting with NF, do I think at first that I will fail. It takes a little bit of alchemy to wrestle gold from our emotions...This DeVoe negra of mine plays a huge part in the sound of La Semana...I am not using any other guitar or lute at all - something I haven't done since Borrasca or Solo Para Ti. BTW, nice to see Lester get credit on Paco's new album, even if his name is misspelled.Tomorrow there will be a discussion of Integral Art at Ken Wilber's. I'm interested in finding out what that means. I always associate art with struggle, though interlaced with the joy of creating. The artists I admire most, of the top of my head I would have to say Pablo Picasso and Miles Davis, were not very integral, were they?

Cake, then. Cake is big in Florence this week. Schiacciata Alla Fiorentina, to be precise, a large flat sponge cake with cream in the middle, dusted with sugar and a small Florentine fleur-de-lys in the corner in chocolate powder. You eat in the weeks before Lent, and so the local cafes and shops have just got it in. I was in Marco's place yesterday to see the unveiling of the first batch, and the effect on the locals was quite remarkable.
"Is that...?" "Yes, it's fresh tod-" "I've have some. Now. Right now. Really. Now. GIVE IT TO ME."
I had to fight two old ladies for the last piece. It was so embarrassing. Here's the recipe for you to avoid such squabbling, now rather common around town. You can find places that had it - an empty baking tray dusted in sugar gives that away somewhat - but can you find any to buy? Not this morning, at least. [Ben Hammersley's Dangerous Precedent]

Movie Music: La Semana Work Mixes Mood: tired Remember the TV series "Kung Fu"? Now, place it today and make the principal character a Spanish Flamenco singer instead of a Chinese monk. You see, this man has an uncontrollable urge to sing when emotions grab him and his voice is so powerful that stuff flies and moves when he sings. Imagine a voice like Jose Merce or El Pele - those guys sound like they could move objects, don't they? Years ago our singer surprised his girlfriend and found her passionately kissing another man - and couldn't help but break into a powerful lament....and the chandelier that hung above the kissing couple fell and killed them. He fled Spain and came to the USA via Mexico.Since every kind of strong emotion forces our hero to sing, he has learned to live by himself and wanders from place to place, from adventure to adventure...For the movie I would pick Johnny Depp as the Flamenco Singer....but if it was a TV series....I don't know....

SFe- Boulder in six Music: Paco - Cositas Buenas, Air - Talkie-Walkie and too many more Mood: glad to have arrived I arrived in Boulder. During the drive I listened to a lot of different music and marveled at the yellow grasses of the Prairie, which were partially covered by snow that reflected the sky. Yellow and baby-blue. The new Paco De Lucia album does not immediately hit me, like some his work used to. I do like the last track on the CD a lot, though. Maybe it will grow on me....even better.
