When I bought my laptop 2 1/2 months ago, it came equipped with the latest in wireless networking.  However, the Charlotte hotel I was staying in the night of my purchase offered no such luxury, so dial up was the only way I could go online.

Included in the box with the computer was a three month free subscription to AOL, so I figured what the hell and went through their registration process and got online.  I made a note of when my 'free' AOL period would end so I would avoid getting billed for the service and that reminder popped up this morning in advance of the January 7th billing date.  So I logged on to AOL to cancel... and the sell job began....

Note to regular readers:  My main reason for posting this was to get the phrase "How to cancel my AOL membership" out to RSS.  In this way, people who are trying to cancel AOL can find out the pitfalls by typing that or similar pharases into Google and other search engines and find this post in the future.  There are some real horror stories out there regarding AOL Hell as it is known.  They seem to prey on new computer users.  My advice - do not sign up with AOL... you may never be able to get rid of them.
