Yesterday, between ski runs, I read the N&O and this article about the state's recent negotiations with Dell Computers caught my eye.  As I read the article, this statement by Dell V.P. Kip Thompson caught my ire...

"If a state like N.C. can't get after this, I'm worried for our country -- there's a certain amount of patriotism here..."

Thompson made this statement after Gov. Easley balked at giving Dell twenty years of state tax exemptions.  Talk about your unadulterated hubris.

Indeed there is a certain amount of patriotism (defined) at issue here.  Thompson's statement indicates his company doesn't have any and that's what should make us all worry.

My Aycock 8th grader Josie told me about what was going to happen after school yesterday and she really wanted to be there in support of her friends even though she's not in the VSN program.  That's the thing.  Aycock has always done a great job of integrating everyone into a unified student body... not "us and them" as some parents apparently want for their kids.

As I read this morning's N&R coverage of the flagpole protest, I got a cold chill brought on by pride.  Aycock has again kept the only bottom-line promise any school should make and any parent could ever hope to be kept...

Teach your children well.
