David Hoggard's take on local politics and life in general from Greensboro, NC

We spent all day yesterday at Disney's Wide World of Sports getting the Gate City Wreckers registered for their tournament which starts today.

One of the greatest things about The Wreckers is their diversity.  Although many teams we have encountered both here in Florida and during previous outings have a token white player on an all-black team, or a couple of black kids on a mostly Caucasian team, the 13 player Wrecker roster is comprised of two Hispanic, five white and six black kids.  We like it this way.  The Wreckers faithfully reflect Greensboro.

Last night, Disney put on an opening ceremony that was, well... Disney-like.  There are nearly 100 teams competing and each of them were introduced mid-field.  It took awhile, but the guys just ate it up.

They have two 'pool play' games today and one tomorrow to get them ceded for the playoffs.

Talk about your high-dollar, investigative reporting... this just in from 'Ali G' in the comments to this post...

"... in case you haven't heard, (Rhino Times reporter) Scott Yost is in Hawaii, much to the surprise of Bruce and Paul, documenting their every move. The Hammer boys were generous enough, it appears, to send Scott on an "all expense paid" chaperoning trip. I would pay dearly to have seen Brucey's and Paul's faces the first time they saw Scott in Hawaii!"

I never had a problem with Commissioners going to Iowa, Georgia or any other state where past national county commissioner conventions have been held in years' past, so I'm not going be two-faced and discriminate against Hawaii for being this year's host.  But Google reveals that the choice of Hawaii for the convention was a dumb decision on the part of the organizers.  The venue has caused problems for county commissioners throughout the US and the organizers should have understood what the political fall-out would be for local elected officials.

But... that said... I, too, would pay what Ali would pay to see the expression on the two Democratic Comissioner's faces when Scott first shows up.  Hopefully the Hammers loaned Scott a camera to document the moment.

Personally I am surprised at this development.  John Hammer is notoriously ...how shall we say, conservative with his money.  But then again... he needs to keep Yost happy and the local political pot stirred.
